6 Things To Know BEFORE You Buy A Triumph Speed Twin 1200!

this is the Triumph Speed twin 1200 a beautiful retro motorcycle that we’ve had plenty of experience with over the past couple of years but there are a few things that might surprise you about it so if you’re thinking of picking one up here are the six key things that you need to know but before we get underway I just want to say a massive thanks to today’s video sponsor and that’s mans gate if you like retro bikes like this then there’s a massively high probability that you’re also sporting a beard and so it’s with great joy that I bring you manscape’s first ever beard trimmer the beard hedger Pro and this thing is serious it’s got a 7200 RPM

Motor and titanium coated blades so it can cut through those wiry beard hairs no problem and with one guard you’ve actually got 20 different cutting lengths which you can easily cycle through with this Zoom wheel so whether you want short stubble or a great big bushy beer dude the beard hedger pro has you covered plus they offer it as part of their awesome beard hedger Pro kit which contains the absolute works for keeping your facial fuzz in fine fatal so the trimmer beard shampoo beard conditioner beard oil beard balm a travel case and some free gifts including a beard brush beard comb and some Precision beard scissors in case you fancy trying your hand at some artistic whisker-based topiary on top of all that head to the link in the description and use the code Moto Bob and you’ll get 20 off and free international shipping which is a heck of a deal so do check them out and once again a massive thanks to manscape for their support now look the first thing I’ve got to tell you about this bike is that it’s a bit of a wolf in sheep’s clothing you see it’s part of the Bonneville lineup which typically biases more

towards character and old school charm than it does White Knuckle performance and it still does have plenty of those classic styling cues that make it look so more nostalgic but this thing really does rip and I reckon it even belies the performance figures on paper just shy of a hundred horsepower I put 7250 RPM it might sound pretty run-of-the-mill compared to simmer today’s bikes but it’s this big whack of torque in the mid-range that means it really does pull at real world Road speeds 112 newton meters of peak torque at 4 250 RPM and it’s just all about guts plus they’ve given it this extremely direct and Lively throttle response which means just a quick turn results in instant acceleration and shove the speed twin massively delivers on fun when it comes to blasting out of Corners at brisk Road speeds but I have to warn you there is a little bit of a trade-off and that’s with the

manners at lower speeds it’s definitely abrupt and so if you’re looking for something for the steady Town commute then you’re really gonna have to temper it with the clutch to get a smooth ride rain mode can help too especially if you’re carrying a passenger and want to avoid being butted in the back of the head and in my experience there owning the 900 equivalent of this bike there are a couple of little fixes you can try one is some throttle spacers that cost just a few quid and they take out the free play which gives you finer control of when the throttle is on and off the other could be a booster plug which I’ve seen variable reports on but mine felt good and the idea is it adds a little more fuel at the low end now some earlier models of the speed swing can also be remapped if you want to go that far but I reckon between the throttle spacers and intentionally riding the bike smoothly it becomes a non-issue number three are much like the fact that the

engine is built to go the chassis is set up to handle sweetly and it does just that if you look at the dimensions and geometry on the spec sheet in many ways it’s closer to something like a street triple R than it is to a classic like the t120 It Feels sure it’s wide in the bars it’s a little bit tail up and basically perfect for a bit of thrashing around now on this second gen you’ve got quite a few upgrades too so there’s now an upside down Fork from mazaki as opposed to the right way at Fork on the first gen and the front end feel and the behavior under braking does feel much improved the brakes themselves are much better too with these four piston radially mounted Brembo M50 monoblock calipers with this radial master cylinder from Brembo as well so there’s more power more feel and also as a side benefit it seems to have largely cured the brakes wheel issue that was super common on the first gen although I still do hear occasionally a bit of a rub at low speeds then you’ve got the tires the standard you now get some proper sporty sticky Metzler Race Tech RR tires and they give you loads of grip in the dry might not be your

first choice if you’re looking to ride year round perhaps something to look at but on a good day my word does this bike go nicely the only aspect of the bike that I’d personally like to change would be the rear shocks now to be fair to Triumph all bikes nowadays are built to a Target price to keep them compared when they go on sale and it feels like this is where Triumph drew the line they’re totally fine for most day-to-day riding but once you start to push a bit you don’t get the level of control you’ll find on higher end suspension and there’s no adjustability either apart from the standard preload now quick search on Google for upgrades will reveal an abundance of options and a couple of times now I’ve ridden speed twins where the only shocks from the Thruxton RS have been fitted with some success I can’t say if they’re a direct match on length but I can say that they did make a world of difference to the ride quality as for the riding position well again this is firmly at the sporty end of the Retro market and so if you’re looking for a comfy

couch for cruising around then I thoroughly recommend something like the t120 which I find very pleasant indeed for that type of biking this is more aggressive the seat’s a little bit more upper 809 mil it’s quite thin in the padding as well which looks great but it’s certainly not a subtle I’d say it’s going to rival a Gold Wing and then the foot pegs are tucked up a bit in fact when you first jump on it given that it’s a retro the instinct is to sort of put your feet with the pegs on the middle but shuffle them back to the balls of your feet and you’ve actually got this sporty position built for a bit more ground clearance and then these grippy pegs too which you feel like you can dance around a bit on it all plays into this sporty personality and it suits it down to the ground in my opinion just don’t expect something lazy and Squishy because this bike really does want to go the only thing I would say I don’t love ergonomically is the side stand the little blob is just too short and I’m always fishing around for it when I get to a stop and if it’s wet there’s really not much to get your boot on but look I’m nitpicking here because the other 99.9 of the time I absolutely love riding this bike now number six and I’d say this is a great starting point for customization and making something that’s special to yourself I mean the first Port of Call would of course be an aftermarket exhaust which could do wonders for the sound morning
